Runner Bean

   Just one lonely Runner Bean ........so maybe I'll have a very late harvest !  

           They are only just beginning to climb up the frame poles !

✨And for my last trick of the day ....✨✨✨

 

                  We went foraging for blackberries in the hedgerow !

   There are lots ready now and lots more to come after today's torrential rain .

A couple of cooking apples from our tree and into the cauldron they go !

10ounces plain flour ✨7ounces butter ✨5ounces soft brown sugar mixed with 2 ounces of demerara sugar .....all stirred up with a handful of oats .

Into the oven for 30-40 minutes......until it looks like this ...... Abracadabra  ✨

     ✨    Apple and Bubbling Blackberry Crumble ........where's the clotted cream ?

Cabbages Planted 🥬🥬

Up at 7am , no brekkers no quick cuppatea , pulled on my wellies and got straight to it !

Change of plan . Decided not to take down the teepee as there are still flowers coming on the french beans .

I decided to make space at the end of the Curly Wurly Kale bed and hoping that I might have enought netting to cover everything .

 The ground in this bed rock hard from being over shadowed by the blue flowering shrub and a big clump of oregano .  I lopped off several branches and pulled the Oregano plant in half .

This bed really needs bulking up with a good thick mulch . Compost I can not afford . 

I plan to put the spent compost from my tomato and cucumber plants when they are finished .

These deep root training pots were a really good investment , I highly recommend them .

I still have a little space for a few Beetroot and Pak Choi .

Then I cobbled together a cloche with some blue water pipe , some plastic trellis and a few cable ties .

   And was delighted to find that the green netting did indeed reach over everything  .

        Ricardo bringing me some rocks and bricks to hold the netting down .

           All done !  Then off to Mc Donalds in Falmouth for brekkers .

On the way back we took a wrong turn , which then lead us to the beautiful ancient Church of St Gluvias in Penryn , where Ricardo had been baptised . Many of his ancestors were baptised , married and buried there . 

One of his most celebrated ancestors being his Grandfather A.J. Thomas , the very well known and respected Penryn Rugby player .🏈

 Always known as A.J.

Granny always said the Vicar, at his baptism , hadn't heard properly his name which he thought he heard was Almond John Thomas . . . . but it turns out that his Great Grandfather and his Great Great Grandfather were also Christened Almond John Thomas !    So it seems that Almond is an old Cornish name !

So we took the opportunity to go in and look around .

We were very lucky ; they had just finished a service and were preparing to close up .

Unfortunately my mobile phone doesn't take clear enough photographs . We will have to come back another time with my proper big camera and a list of his ancestors names  . We were not really prepared but had a quick look around and the church wardens were very kind and helpful and showed us a book with all the names of people baptised , married and buried..even with a map to show where the graves are ! 

We couldn't look around the grave-yard because it was about to pour with rain and we dashed back to the car .... Ricardo determined to come again .......me feeling very happy for the rain to settle my cabbage babies in !  🌧️🌧️🌧️

                             The sun is shining again now ☀️

Oh dear ! How sad ! Never mind ! 🤣

           So yesterday ,    since we were in the Marazion area again .......

                               I went back to check .........  😔

                                                  

                             

Every Day is a Picnic Day !

                       Yes ! Even when the weather is like this !

We make some simple sandwiches and go somewhere for a walk and a picnic .

Ricardo had cheese and ham and onion relish ..... I had peanut butter 😊

Sometimes we just park up and sit and watch the waves . The sky looked pretty threatening , but wow look I had the whole beach to myself ! 

Ricardo didn't trust that angry looking sky and stayed in the car .

I couldn't resist and it looked like I might have ten minutes or so before the rain arrived .

 The child in me , always so excited to get down on the beach !

                                 ( 37seconds of visual torture .....  🤣)

I watched this back today and thought, did I tread on a coin on the way down the steps ? !!!   Was it ? 😮 Was that a one pound coin ? 

               It's a seaweedy day ......lots washed up ..so pretty .

There were lots of Ruddy Turnstones . So busy looking for food they don't notice me coming up quite close . 

 They are so well camouflaged and run about so fast that my camera couldn't focus on them .

                        Then on I went looking for lovely pebbles .

I didn't have much time as the sky grew darker and the wind picked up again .

                                The prettiest seaweed of the day !

   This tiny pebble was the winner today and came home in my kagoul pocket .

                 So where will you take your picnic today ?

Planting out more Leeks

 I can't wait to clear out the tomato and cucumber plants , but they are still producing fruits . So on with the watering !

             Overjoyed to see this beautiful Butternut Squash !

I picked all the Egyptian Walking Onion bulbils . I'll pot them up tomorrow and bring them on in the shed .

   I found a Golden Hop seedling coming up in the crushed rock of our drive .

             Very pleased with that !

Rain was forecast , so I thought I'd take this opportunity to plant out my second wave of leeks and some more cabbages seedlings .

The first wave of leeks that I planted back in the spring were L . Jaune du Poitou .      The second wave of Leeks are a more winter hardy variety called  L. Bleu de Solaise .

     I planted most of the leeks out , but my back was aching ... not too bad ..but enough to know I couldn't do anymore . 

The cabbages will have to wait and be planted out another day . 

   Maybe tomorrow ....we'll see how I feel tomorrow . 

The thing is , it is not such a simple job .

  Before I plant them , I have to take out one of the bean teepees and after I have planted them , I have to fix up a big cloche to cover them . 

    I do this with some old blue water pipe and mesh and then fasten the netting down with bricks and rocks and things .   I also need to gather my bricks and rocks and things ! 

            So it's not as easy as just planting the cabbage seedlings .

As I carried the cabbage seedlings back to the shed , it began to spit with rain ... sparing me from the miserable job of filling and carting the heavy watering can up to the vegetable garden .

More rain coming tonight to settle my leeks in and to make the earth soft again so I can easily fix up the cloche for the cabbages .

Cabbages and Clouds

 

The weather is changing and we are seeing some really beautiful clouds now .

                             A slight rainbow in this one !

                And whispy ones ....

        ...... and fishscale type ones that promise rain , but it doesn't come .

                           Our walk along the cliffs .

We ran back to the car thinking these squalls were coming our way , but they just rolled in across LandsEnd and Penzance  . We stayed dry !

So proper rain is forecast for tomorrow  and I have been busy pulling weeds  to make room for my cabbage seedlings .

  It is very windy today , a sure sign of coming rain . 

             So here we go ! 

I pulled back the netting . A nice line of Parsnips . Carrots dotted about here and there and lots of beautiful curlywurly kale  .    🦋

I climbed in and set about pulling out the weeds .  

Once again , the weeds have helped to keep the moisure in the good earth .

                            I filled that wheelbarrow !

  I made space for my cabbages . 

I didn't really dig as such , rather I just prized the good earth up a little bit to make it easier for the rain to soak down to the plant's roots .

    🐌   I found two snails and relocated them .🐌

This was really hard work for me , my knee and poorly back are aching and I forgot to bring out the kneeler and the ground was rock hard to kneel on and too far to go back to the cottage to get it and lunch was almost ready and if I stopped now I wouldn't be able to get going again ! 

     So I carried on in pain and planted out a few of each red and white cabbages . 

                                  .......and firmed them in !

And threw the netting back over them all and made it good and secure all around the edges with bricks and rocks and an old fence post .

That took me a good hour to do . I still have some greyhound cabbages and some leeks to plant out . 

  Not sure if I can manage it before the rain comes . I have to pace myself .

I'm glad I got this bed weeded and planted up though . 

                                  That's it for today . I am done ! 

A quick shower ...... 😱...you know Autumn is a coming in when you step into the shower and see this !

.......oh my goodness !  Help !!!! 

 Ricardo calls out to me " Are we off for our walk now then ? " 🤪 O.k. I,m coming !   

And when we get back I 'm having a flop on my bed with some patchwork .

                       Cheerio for now !
