Leeks and Onions

I spent most of yesterday planting out my Leek "Bleu de Solaise" and Globo Giant Onion seedlings .

I am behind due to a couple of hospital appointments and my Achilles tendon still not being too good . Ultra sound coming up on Thursday . . . then appointments for physio I suspect , we'll see what they suggest . Also waiting for physio on my spine and not really looking forward to that .

ANYWAY

๐Ÿฆ‹๐ŸŒฟI am at my happiest in my garden .๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ๐Ÿฆ‹

The doctor said that I really have to pace myself working in the garden and not to over do it .

So I didn't do any heavy digging , that garden fork is for holding the netting over it all after I planted everything out .

Just a bit of gentle raking it over .

I gave the this pot of leek seedlings a good soak then tipped them out onto that tray .....

....and pulled them gently apart .

Some people like to wait until they get to "pencil thickness " and some people like to chop the tops off and some people like to snip some of the roots off  .

I don't .

Some people like to swirl them around on a bucket of water with a bit of manure stirred into it ....there probably is something beneficial in that one  .

But this time I have not done that either .

So then...
I got all artistic and went straight on to making holes in a circle , around the fork with the dibber .......
   ( it's what Debbie's do ! ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿคฃ)

.....and which actually after having planted a couple of artistic circles , you couldn't really notice the pattern after all ! lol !

(but straight lines are so boring ! ๐Ÿคฃ) and I was having such fun !

Make a hole .

Drop it in gently ....

 ..... and make sure it's comfortable .

      Then don't backfill !

Just pour a little water into each planted hole to settle them in , or time it for when there is rain coming .

Then I planted out my Globo Giant Onion babies . I am quite a bit behind with planting these out . These aren't really working out for me , as the gentleman I was following for instruction went on to repot and repot and repot and repot again keeping them under cover and bringing them on for showing in exhibition . I haven't got space in my shed to do that unfortunately . I'm just growing them to eat and I want big ones . These are said to be very tasty ones too . So -
I thought I'll plant them out anyway .

With military precision and in terrifyingly straight lines .  There wasn't enough space to do anything more artistic !

It is said that "The further apart you plant onions , the larger they will grow ." And this I know to be true ! For the last few years , I haven't had much luck with onion sets . So this year I have done them from seed .
If it works, then next year I will start even more off from seed ..because 12 onions is not really enough is it ?
I usually do a whole lot better with my Leeks .

I threw down some chicken pellets and then spent almost an hour faffing about with nasty fibre glass hoops which really hurt my hands and pulling across that netting on my own and finding rocks and bricks to hold it all down .

See how the old fork in the middle of the bed is holding up the netting .

I planted out this lovely red rose that I grew from a cutting and six lavender plants either side of the bean frame , for the bees ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›

I have lots more Lavender waiting to be planted out . I love it so much . I dream of turning the whole vegetable garden into a Lavender garden one day  !

So then , we did have a little bit of rain during the small hours of the morning , but the water-butts are sill very low .
There may be more rain coming on Thursday, finger's crossed ! They have promised a deluge ๐ŸŒง️ Hopefully it will come over night and the sun will return in the morning.to keep everyone happy .

I also planted out Sunflowers , Hollyhocks , Nicotiana , Artichokes , and the Dinner-plate Dahlias that my daughter gave me are starting to make an appearance  .
I've put chicken-wire around this bed to keep the bunnykins out . So far , so good .

                                                     ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿฐ๐ŸฆŒ๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒฟ

                                                       ๐ŸŒง️☀️๐ŸŒง️
