Looks good from a distance .
A really horrible and very depressing mess ....sigh ...
Something got in there and grazed my onion sets down to the grids . Thank goodness I put grids over them . I hope they will come back .
I needed to take off the old chicken wire ....I use it until it becomes rusty and beginning to crumble . I just let it go too far this time .
Also while my back was turned , the weeds sprung up .
Weeding frenzy !
I took out all the rusting and ripped chicken wire and pulled back the netting and filled a couple of wheel barrows with the weeds .
We decided to take out the garlic .
And replace that end of the vegetable bed with Sprouts ...and maybe sow some carrots .
He also did the edges ! Which really made a big difference .
At some point we stopped for lunch .....and almost a nap ....
The weather is said to be getting very warm , followed by possible thunderstorms and heavy rain on Friday ( 💛🖤Kernow Weather Team 💛🖤)
Then got back to work .
I'm starting to feel better about this vegetable bed now , but still a long way to go .
This morning it has been very warm with typical Cornish mizzle in the air . I can't work when it is hot and really wanted to get this bed sorted before the temperatures rise . Also the vegetable garden will be very grateful for the rain when it comes .
So ...
Lime , chicken pellets , slug pellets and cabbage collars .
Trod them in good and hard ....to get nice tight sprouts .
I scattered a packet of carrot seeds down ....
I didn't check to see if they are good companions .
Too late now , they had just better get along !
.........there are also a couple of rows of chives in this bed . So pretty and easy to grow from seed .
I pulled the netting back over the whole bed this time . So glad that it could reach to the other end over hoops and the old garden fork in the middle to support it .
This took me most of the day and my head is still spinning from hanging upside down weeding and planting !

Our small garden has 6' fences all around and after gardening here for over 16 years we don't get too many weeds.
ReplyDeleteWell worth the effort - isn’t gardening always.
